Serengeti Projects
Wildlife De-Snaring
As proud members of the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO), TSA is committed to supporting critical conservation efforts in Tanzania, including the fight against poaching. In the Serengeti, poaching remains a serious threat to wildlife, but thanks to collaborative efforts between Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) and tour operators like us, real progress is being made. We are actively funding the Frankfurt Zoological Society’s de-snaring program, which has led to thousands of snares being removed and hundreds of animals released alive. These teams, including former poachers working under TANAPA, conduct regular patrols in the most vulnerable areas of the park, significantly disrupting snaring and meat poaching. With the strong backing of TANAPA and fellow tour operators, we’re proud to play a role in preserving the Serengeti for future generations.
Eco-system Management Project
The Serengeti Ecosystem Management project, led by the Frankfurt Zoological Society, plays a crucial role in protecting the Serengeti’s rich biodiversity while promoting sustainable development for local communities. The Serengeti is a complex mosaic of protected areas and community lands, where wildlife moves freely throughout the year. Recognizing this, the project works closely with local residents to engage them in conservation efforts and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities. Many local people rely on natural resources for survival, but unsustainable practices are threatening wildlife and their habitats. By promoting alternative income sources and creating incentives for conservation, the project helps ensure that communities benefit from protecting the Serengeti ecosystem, fostering a balance between conservation and sustainable development.
Rhino Conservancy & Rehabilitation
In the 1970s, Serengeti National Park was home to around 700 black rhinos, but rampant poaching nearly wiped them out by the 1980s. By 1993, only three remained in the Moru Kopjes area. In response, the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) partnered with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) to establish a rhino conservation project in 1996, creating the Michael Grzimek Memorial Rhino Post for monitoring and education.
The Serengeti Rhino Repatriation Project (SRRP) aims to boost the dwindling rhino population by introducing additional rhinos. FZS supports TANAPA’s ongoing conservation efforts by providing food rations to protection teams, aerial surveillance for monitoring, and logistical support, including repairs for their vehicles. They assist with rhino tagging operations, fitting radio transmitter horn implants for tracking, and supplying telemetry equipment. With FZS’s financial and technical support, the Ngorongoro-Serengeti black rhino population has now become one of the largest free-ranging populations in Africa.
Aerial Monitoring
The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) recognizes that aircraft play a vital role in the effective conservation of the Serengeti ecosystem. With the park covering approximately 15,000 square kilometers, regular low-flying aerial patrols are essential for monitoring wildlife, conducting censuses, and responding swiftly to security threats or poaching incidents. These flights allow for real-time reporting to Serengeti National Park authorities, enabling prompt action on the ground.
FZS has been integral to aerial surveillance since 1964 when it supplied the first aircraft to the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA). Today, the aerial support includes an Aviat Husky for low-altitude spotting and a Cessna 172 for logistical support. Wildlife censuses are conducted using systematic flight patterns, with trained crews counting animals within defined sample areas, ensuring accurate data collection essential for long-term conservation management. This ongoing commitment to aerial monitoring and collaboration with TANAPA and the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute has been pivotal in safeguarding the Serengeti’s rich biodiversity, a legacy dating back to the Grzimeks’ historic efforts in the late 1950s.
Seronera Workshop
The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) collaborates with the Tanzanian government to enhance conservation efforts through its workshop in Seronera. This facility maintains all patrol vehicles for the rhino protection unit in Serengeti National Park, ensuring ranger mobility for effective monitoring. By minimizing service and repair times, the workshop keeps rangers in the field, vital for ecosystem protection.
In addition to vehicle maintenance, the workshop fabricates radio towers and structures for solar equipment and supports anti-poaching efforts. Operating at full capacity, FZS services around 40 vehicles monthly, reinforcing the comm
